Baywatch star cancels search for Noah’s Ark

Urgent Prayer Concern:  Former “Baywatch” star Donna D’Errico turned down a spot on “Dancing With the Stars,” to focus on finding Noah’s ark. “I went to Catholic school and was fascinated by Noah’s ark. This has been a dream of mine since I was 9 or 10,” she told AOL News. D’Errico, 43, was formerly married to Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx and had a photo spread in the September 1995 issue of “Playboy.” But after training for 12 weeks and filming her journey for an eight-part documentary, she had to cancel when first her hiking partner and then her Kurdish guide dropped out because of death threats. Please pray that her history-making quest may continue. (via Metafilter)

Review: Reap the Wild Wind

FINDING CHRIST IN CULTURE DEPT.— Finding Christian allegory within popular culture is never so rewarding as when it is difficult. So my reward was great as I delved into a classic film that has dropped from popular consciousness today but was a hit in 1942– Reap The Wild Wind starring John Wayne, Ray Milland and Paulette Goddard.

Reap the Wild WindI was sure the incomparable Gospel message had to be hidden somewhere within this  improbable story that combines pirates in Key West during the 1840s, slavery, betrayal, a ventriloquist with a talking dog,  several shipwrecks, characters copied carte blanche from Gone With The Wind, a plot twist that turns on the invention of the safety match, and an attack by a clearly fake giant squid (The film won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects).

The first thing that strikes the viewer is the fog. There’s lots of fog. And isn’t that a lot like life? The futility, the confusion, the inability to see where you’re going? Your life becomes a shipwreck, and then the salvagers arrive to pick you clean.  The chief pirate/salvager, “King Cutler,” is so obviously a type of Satan, the great deceiver, that we’re not surprised when his plan almost succeeds in destroying the love of the strong-willed Loxi Claiborne for both Capt. Jack Stuart and the aristocratic Steve Tolliver.

In fact, placing Capt. Jack in the Judas role, Loxi as the Bride/Church, and Steve (who almost dies, Christ-like, in the depths struggling with the Beastly Squid, yet rises again) as the Savior, I am only left, puzzled and musing, on the role of the talking dog. Mysterious are the ways of the Spirit, both in cinema and in life.

Rick Perry Devotional: Immigration policy

Editor’s Note: Gov. Perry is our guest devotional writer.
As an Aggie, I’ve always had warm relations with our friends from south of the border.

But our focus today is a Godly illegal immigration policy. The scriptures say you shall not allow foreigners that are pagans to emigrate into or dwell in your nation; for they shall be as pricks in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they shall trouble you in your land (Exod. 23:33; Num. 33:5; Josh. 23:12-13). Millions of idol-worshipping Roman Catholic hispanicos have settled around us, maybe even in your neighborhood. Bottom line? Turn the other cheek, but promptly contact ICE. This is America. Get your ne’er-do-well son-in-law to get up there and roof your house in the blazing Texas heat.

Just don’t mention Soylent Green

Two new eco-friendly end-of-life options are coming to a funeral home near you.  A Glasgow-based company has installed its first commercial “alkaline alkaline_hydrolysishydrolysis” unit at a Florida funeral home. It works by dissolving the body in heated alkaline water in under three hours. The process of “resomation”  produces a third less greenhouse gas than cremation, uses a seventh of the energy, and allows for the complete separation of dental amalgam for safe disposal.

In Sweden, a biologist has developed a technology called “promession” which treats the dead body with liquid nitrogen, then breaks the frozen body into fragments, and the remains are poured into a  small, square biodegradable coffin for shallow burial. She got the idea from composting, she said.

Tebow jersey sales lost in wilderness

Urgent Prayer Concern: The Denver Post is reporting that sales of Broncos Tim Tebowbackup quarterback Tim Tebow’s jerseys have plummeted. According to the NFL, the Heisman Trophy-winning, home-schooled Christian MK has fallen from No. 1 in  jersey sales all the way to 10th.

Please pray that his powerful gridiron witness be restored.
